i do not see why google would not want these features on their ios app. they get to collect data from users for traffic reports. data collected from users while navigation also helps in improving suggestions for other users and of course the maps themselves! what i hear from the stories was that google wanted ads on their places databases like they have on their android app. Apple of course would not have allowed this. similar to how youtube app now has ad supported videos. earlier, the same videos did not work on the ios platform.

Ah, well, the comments on en gadget et al seem very biased towards Apple if that indeed is the case. I'd read something on the lines of Google not wanting to provide turn by turn nav to iOS, and Apple being left with no choice but to ditch them.

i still do not see why google would have issues with that. i mean i understand that they have this feature exclusive to android devices right now. but they would have only gained by offering the same feature on their ios app. i guess we would find out when and if they launch a standalone app for ios. would be interesting to see if that would include turn by turn navigation with voice support.

Right, that's what I'd been thinking. As for the second part of your post, I'm pretty sure they would, else, it'd show them in poor light, and further Apple's claim of them not wanting to provide voice and turn by turn nav

Still .. y would Apple launch such a useless map app when they still have one year of contract left with google ..They have made the users suffer just cos of their ego ..

exactly. also from what i have read, the google maps on ios app was more like an Apple app feature google data. google did not decide what they could do with it. and that is why it saw rare feature updates with ios updates. if google had control over that app, it would have been updated with new features at a much faster pace. i have seen no other google mobile app that has better features on android compared to ios. most of the times they add new features on their ios app before it is rolled out in the android edition.--lol. you answered your question yourself. apple has a huge ego :Dthe reprots claiming apple did not want google ads inside a native ios app makes much more sense to me.crap. for some reason the spell checker had stopped working on my chrome installation ever since i downgraded from dev channel to beta. :|
