ok...here's my part....i stay at hanumanpet , malkajgiri ..i applied for beam telecom on may 15th (2mbps Unlimited) and i paid half yearly amount and i was told i would get my connection in 10 days ....10 days gone, 20 days gone and i still didnt get my connection and last week when i called them regarding my connection they said ..its not feasible to give connection in my area as there is an issue with local provider in my area....i further enquired regarding that and i came to know that , i was about to get my connection , beam guys were laying cables to my place and the local provider happens to see them and yells/shout at them for coming to my area and he went to beams branch office and created a big fuss and got mine and 6 other connection canceled in my areafurther enquiring i came to know that the local provider in my area buys leased line from beam telecom and run his own crapy ISP service in my area.. which is on his local LAN , private IP's and crappy 24online client and he never lets any other service come near my area apart from his crapy service and bsnl (the only saving grace now )yesterday i got a call from beam and i was told i would be getting my refund in 1 week ...phew !!wish i could have beam ..

This is the kind of thing we are facing in Mumbai and may potentially in future in other cities. We may have to supply our cable contractors with guns. Big ones.

yeah local cable guys sucks...but in my case im out of options...either BSNL or local cable.....so finally i had a serious chat with the local cable guy and told him that i want beams 2mbps UL and asked if he could provide me that ...he said he can provide 2mbps but it will be private IP's 172.x .x.x crap and speed will be upto 1.6mbps...i was about to turn down that ...and he said he can provide public IP (static) for rs500 and lay fiber optics direct to my house so totaling rs1500 for 2mbps UL( i could get 4mbps UL with beam :( )..but said he wont apply FUP on me ....so i went for it ..fiber optiocs media converter at my place ....i got my connection today speedtest shows download speed 1.8mbps , upload 1.5mbps ..he said speed will be upto 2mbps.....1.5mbps constantfor torrents im getting 200 to 220KBps so far its goodnot even one day ..gotta see how it is and check if he's really telling the truth about no FUP for me..i'll disconnect if the speeds are not constant

Both these options (public IP for extra Rs) and no FUP by the calewala... sound sus to me... neither of those things should be in his hands... but you never know in India :PThe cabling arrangement too... could be his but Beam has given the impression that it lays its own. Maybe its Beam, maybe it's not. Would be interesting to see what IP you get and how your data travels out to the net. Customer satisfaction is the concern - if it turned out that the cablewala was *claiming* to provide my company's service and he actually wasn't, I'd be annoyed because it could affect my reputation. But, other than that, if speed is good, what else matters? Look forward to the report.

local cable guy buys leased line from beam telecom and uses crappy 24online server/client software for his crappy ISP service in my area ...cabling is also done by his people ..part of agreement i guess...he has 200 connections in my area( thats what he says but i doubt)

and when i asked him regarding bandwidth allocation....he said bandwidth allocation is done at his place and not beam's ....btw i had to fill up beam telecom's application to get my connection and when i asked if i'll get beam's userid he said he will be getting it and not me.........and regarding static ip(public ip) he assigned me 202.53.x.x ip and i did a traceroute to google.com

here are my speed test results mumbai server
https://www.speedtest.net

singapore server
https://www.speedtest.net

those speeds are decent right ?
for torrents speed varies from 200 - 220KBps ..not more than that
same from http downloads

this is my 2nd day of connection ...so far good ...i will not hesitate to disconnect if the service is bad later on ..coz i doubt about his bandwidth allocations ...to all others its dynamically assigned private NAT'ed IP 172.x.x.x like earlier beamcable days

when i asked him why he's not able to provide public dynamic IP's like beamtelecom ...he says beam's equipment is more superior than his ..gave crap reason

anyways will keep posting .

---------- Post added at 08:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:21 PM ----------

oh and the reason he said no FUP is coz bandwidth allocation is done from is leased line..... but i seriously doubt that , will monitor usage and see if its truly no FUP

is there a way to notify about his service to beams higher officials , or owner Brijesh ....email or something ..i pay 1500rs for 2mbps and where as in beam for rs1500 i would get 4mbps UL

people in my area... who are a little technical stick with bsnl and rest non-technical people are an easy prey for this cable guy ..as he dosent let any other service come near my area

24Online sucks. I don't know why anyone uses it, except that I hear it's easy to set up on the server.

and when i asked him regarding bandwidth allocation....he said bandwidth allocation is done at his place and not beam's ....btw i had to fill up beam telecom's application to get my connection and when i asked if i'll get beam's userid he said he will be getting it and not me.........

Personally that would send red-flags: never know how the information could be misused... but it may also be a requirement from Beams end since he probably has to be "responsible" for your usage - it might be that Beam are providing him as if each of his customers are employees in a company rather than paying subscribers, but I may also be dreaming up scenarios here - it's a dirty business in India.

Would be nice to know the first 2 IP addresses so I can see who owns them. Probably Tata or Beam Tele anyway.

Yeah these speeds are OK.

this is my 2nd day of connection ...so far good ...i will not hesitate to disconnect if the service is bad later on ..coz i doubt about his bandwidth allocations ...to all others its dynamically assigned private NAT'ed IP 172.x.x.x like earlier beamcable days

It probably is, but there is any number of reasons - I expect he doesn't have his own IP address block, and Beam won't give him a pool from theirs...

oh and the reason he said no FUP is coz bandwidth allocation is done from is leased line..... but i seriously doubt that , will monitor usage and see if its truly no FUP

Beam probably know already - they probably didn't want to give him the cut of revenue that he demanded (in addition to you, he would have wanted to charge Beam too) - 12% is roughly typical, and he probably demanded too high.

But there is nothing stopping him from leasing a line - there are many ways he could be doing this. I suspect that basically Beam will be reselling part of their own Tata connection directly to him and providing that way - since he only has 200 people to worry about he probably didn't want to spend the money on a license and has probably got about a 20Mbit/s pipe and is provisioning it from there.

At least you don't get FUP'd.

people in my area... who are a little technical stick with bsnl and rest non-technical people are an easy prey for this cable guy ..as he dosent let any other service come near my area

And cablewalas wonder why they get shot at every now-and-then (I'm not a fan). My old cablewala was extremely rude to me when I wanted to subscribe to a service (about a year ago)... I just wanted to punch him in the face.

the last time i used 24Online... i wanted to pull my hair out and kill somebody.

he was boasting about redundancy... that he's got a TATA line underground connection and beam's leased line over head

and yeah 24online sucks big time ....i was with beamcable from 2004 to 2006(same cable guy was incharge for beamcable ) ...i hated 24online and still hate it ..switched to bsnl from 2006 to 2010 ...now back with cable guy ..i didnt disconnect bsnl ...will be using my old pc as load balancing router with beam and bsnl's connection

im atually thinking of striking a deal with the local cable guy....helping him setup DHCP server with public ip's for free internet...if not public ip's .....a normal dhcp, gateway server using vyatta, pfsense, clearos etc etc .........every other is better than that crappy 24online server !!..phew !!

anyway will keep posting about his network

Redundancy? For him maybe, but in reality, not: Beam uses Tata 100%, so if Tata goes down, he's screwed.

I don't know why 24Online is even used... it might be to prevent from tampering with usage statistics or something but frankly I've not seen the advantages.

im atually thinking of striking a deal with the local cable guy....helping him setup DHCP server with public ip's for free internet...if not public ip's .....a normal dhcp, gateway server using vyatta, pfsense, clearos etc etc .........every other is better than that crappy 24online server !!..phew !!

Is the cablewala willing to spend money?

You got lucky.

Redundancy? For him maybe, but in reality, not: Beam uses Tata 100%, so if Tata goes down, he's screwed.

Most of the ISPs buy Bandwidth from others. That's a common scenario. I don't think any such case will arise where the Networks are down, because these High Capacity Fibre Links are bound by Service Level Agreements that ensure guaranteed uptime.
