Most of the ISPs buy Bandwidth from others. That's a common scenario. I don't think any such case will arise where the Networks are down, because these High Capacity Fibre Links are bound by Service Level Agreements that ensure guaranteed uptime.

Apparently this is not the case. Beam's edge routers do not announce themselves to any of the other networks Border Gateway Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Probably they have redundant circuits leading in to their central office (if one goes down the other kicks in) which reduces the possibility of a complete outage in the event of damage to physical media or something like that, but if those cables end up in the same place (not likely, but you never know), that could create a problem - SLA or not. In my experience, SLAs are rarely stuck to, but in addition, SLAs in India rarely go as high as five-9's anyway, so the tolerance for downtime is still there.

What would be of concern is 100% of Beam's bandwidth comes from Tata, it still works out as a single point of failure if, for instance, someone screws up a BGP table at either end or accidentally performs some route filtering - that ISP could disappear entirely from the internet very easily, and this would not be covered by an SLA.

For me it's more that I personally wouldn't want to risk "putting all my eggs in one basket".

btw beam buys bandwidth from Bharti right ? and btw yesterday i asked my cablewala regarding helping him out with DHCP server with public IP's ...as expected he said buying IP pool is expensive ...but he showed interest in linux based gateway instead of crappy 24online server ( had tough time explaining him regarding that ..phew !!) gotta see how it goes ...will keep posting

As mentioned in previous post, 100% Tata. They do not directly pass traffic on to either Bharti or Reliance' ASNs, so it's safe to say that they do not lease circuits from or peer directly with either Bharti or Reliance.

okie....hey i have been noticing that my internet is very slow on my hackintosh ( OSX leopard 10.5.8) websites load very slow ..where as for torrents i get 200KBps this could be DNS issue right ? or something to do at cablewala's end ??.... but on my linux webpages load pretty fast btw today morning cabelwala called me and was asking where to get fiber switches from 3com....i suggested him qlogic

Are the DNS settings on your Linux box different to those on your Hackintosh box?

3com is now HP. It's not bad stuff but... an unusual choice, I must say. I suppose it all depends on how much capacity he wants as to what he needs to get... probably something from the fixed-port E series if I were to guess.

IP,subnet,DNS,gateway all are same DNS: 123.176.37.37 and 38.38

seems like DNS issue ....im using a static ip and the DNS assigned to me is 123.176.37.37/38 ( i also tried 202.53.8.8/9)web browsing is very slow when i use that DNS ...but when i changed my DNS to google's public DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 web browsing/name look ups are very fast dose anyone experiencing issues with beam telecoms DNS ?

Yeah.. Beam's DNS is quite slow. Try out UsingNameBench - namebench - Project Hosting on Google Code to find out the fastest DNS for you.

for some reason i was not able to download namebench using beam's connection( namebench download wont start, all other http downloads work)...i have beam 2mbps and bsnl 512kbps ...i switched to bsnl 512k and downloaded namebench and tried it

posting top 4 results :

202.53.8.8
202.148.202.3
8.8.4.4
202.53.8.9

i also noticed that youtube is not working with beam's connection (2mbps) ...it works fine on my bsnl 512kbps connection but on beam's connection it dosent work dosent get past the spinning wheel of the player

anyone notice that ?
