technically speaking, the same applied to Nokia. they had too much invested in the meego platform along with symbian. and they pretty much discarded most of it to switch to windows phone. blackberry is a lot like Apple. they are mostly a service company and to make it viable, they are in the hardware business. and i do not think microsoft would have much interest in the blackberry services market considering they have their own exchange platform baked into almost all smartphones out there.

Like you mentioned, it doesnt make sense buying BB for their hardware, when they have Nokia wagging their tails behind them. I am not a technical expert, but I am aware of the exchange server thing, also I think there is something more as people use BB's services & their phones even though they have exchange server thing at office.

same position here technically speaking. but this is what i believe. corporate people love(d) blackberry devices. so they accessed their office's microsoft exchange through blackberry devices. blackberry forces them to use BIS to access BBM and other mobile services. so they make money even if the user is not accessing a company managed platform offered by Blackberry?

Like Nokia officer said that if WP fails, they have some "Plan B", similarly investing in BB could be "Plan B" for MS :)And it would always be good for MS to have some solid hardware as backup "if" Nokia discontinues to work on WP in future. (other OEM like Samsung, HTC, Sony, LG, ZTE, Asus, etc are their for WP though).

Well, as I said I doubt it will happen before BB10 launch. They have spent too much time & effort in pushing it. So, maybe he is buying more share NOW for a good deal say 6 months or so later. The prices are at a low, it might be a gamble on prices going up , atleast a bit based on BB10 & then a selloff at a good price.
