TV hires 5 more transponders to beam 100 new channels
New Delhi, Dec. 28
Dish TV, the country's largest direct-to-home (DTH) company, has expanded its transmission capacity by leasing five more transponders from Antrix, the commercial arm of Indian Space Research Organisation.
Dish TV said it has signed a long-term deal with Antrix for these additional transponders on Asiasat, which would increase the company's total transponder capacity to 17, the highest in the industry. The total transmission bandwidth stands increased to 648 MHz from the earlier 432 MHz.
The increase in bandwidth would allow the company to add some 100 new channels on the standard definition (SD) format to its platform, said Mr R.C. Venkateish, CEO, Dish TV. Or else, the company could add some 45 channels on the High Definition (HD) format.
Dish TV currently has some 271 channels on its DTH platform, including four HD channels.
Dish TV shares ended almost flat on the BSE to close at Rs 67.70 on Tuesday.
“We will be able to offer region-specific content, enhanced value-added service (VAS), as well as a substantially enhanced HD bouquet, driving growth of HD services,” said Mr Jawahar Goel, Managing Director, Dish TV, in a statement.
The company believes that by enhancing VAS and providing regional content it can increase the average revenue per user (ARPU). The ARPU for September quarter stood at Rs 139.
“The overall width of our bouquet in terms of number of channels will be 25-30 per cent higher than any other DTH platform in India, giving us a significant competitive advantage,” Mr Venkateish added.
Further, Mr Venkateish said that the company expects to add about a million subscribers in the current quarter. In November, the company had reported a subscriber addition of five lakh while the overall subscriber base stood at nine million.
