Good morning, My husband has a Sony vaio laptop he uses a reliance data card with, which is good but pretty slow.I have a new laptop, an HP Pavillion and will probably get a datacard also for when I am travelling but would like to get broadband at home so at least we can have a fast connection there. Just wondering about if we need to get a router and/or any other external equipment? We are going to go with MTNL triband, probably the DSL599 plan. What do we need so we can just plug our laptops into it whenever we are at home? Thanks for your advice!

Just the router. You should have a built-in ethernet card. Or, you could opt for a wireless option. Nothing else required.

@KylaWelcome to Broadbandforum.in.1. Your husband's Sony VAIO will have a LAN adapter for wireless. ( look a the left sideof the laptop) . 2. Your HP pavillion same .3. When you get MTNL DSL599 plan ask for a Wireless modem. The modem supplied by MTNL will be connected to your telephone line via splitter.MTNL LIne==>>RJ11 cable ==.>> splitter ===>PHonePort===>>Rj11 all telephones ..................................====>>ADSL Port===Rj11===>to wireless modem. This will avoid all cable connections from the modem to your laptop/s. and probably you can operate the laptop/s from any room in your house/flat ( depends how large is your house /flat !!!)4. If MTNL does not provide a wireless modem, then you have to buy an extra Wireless router like D-Link WRT54GC etc . more details later.

Hi,
Welcome to Broadbandforum.in
I agree with what ‘essbebe’ regarding your laptops having wireless LAN adapters.
I just would like to add that you have the option of buying or renting the broadband modem as well as the wireless router from MTNL, frankly I find it better to buy the h/w myself. I bought & setup my own h/w (saves on rent :) ) I too use the same package from Prabhadevi exchange from Dec 2005.
You have the choice of buying a combined h/w consisting of DSL modem & wireless router (available at Lamington Road) or, buying separate DSL modem/router & seperate wireless router. In case you are buying your own wireless router, I suggest Linksys WRT54G (bought one 2 weeks ago for Rs 2450 w/3 yrs warranty) and the setting up is mentioned on this forum or you check out http://socrates0.blogspot.com/2007/12/how-to-configure-linksys-wrt54g.html
