clarify.

its simple. i have a UT star adsl2+ modem thats wired to my PC. all i want to do is replace my UT star modem with a Netgear or Linksys one that can remain wired to my PC while allowing my Laptop to wirelessly share the connection.

Use your preset modem + Netgear WGR614V6 wifi router.
You can use your laptop in Wifi mode without any
Data cable being connected.
Desktop also will be connected to Netgear LAN1 port.

you dont need to buy a wifi router WITH inbuilt DSL modem as you already have a dsl modem.. you can just get a normal wifi router and connect them together..
