The existing bsnl copper wire is strong enough to carry data ranging around 18mbps very easily provided your SNR rates are at least 20db down. The reason why the line disconnects is because of the several joints in the copper wire from the exchange to the house. Thus the connection never stays in sync for more than 5 minutes.

@shaktidas
I asked you to provide me your modem model and you haven't done that yet. In the mean time, refer the below tutorial and see if that helps.
Chennai Telephones- Changing password in DataOne Pre-configured modem

One more thing... low SNR rates like say 10-15db doesn't mean your connection will loose sync every 5 minutes. It simply means that your internet speed will be low. You won't be able to enjoy the full 2mbps experience.So, disconnections has nothing to do with SNR rates. The three reasons for disconnections are any of these:1) Your copper wire has several joints in between.2) You have not connected your adsl modem via splitter. This has several conditions.3) A problem with the exchange.It's better to know where the problem lies else you will be tweaking in all the wrong places with no results in the end.

thanx essebebe...ur suggestions wer a bit fruitful but i messed up wit mah lan connection as suggested by the link provided by u n i got disconnected temporarily...i though have managed to cennect mah net again but i just got ****ed up...i think i need a practical viewer to solve this...i think i needa call bsnl assistants...:ashamed:

Till now it seems you have not mentioned your modem router model and make . there are approx 7654 modems/routers in the world ( more added every day . latest number not known ) , and how do we tell you which o ne to program

mah modem is siemens c2110....wat i did is widout changing the ip and gateways as mentioned in the website C2110 (Type-A) ADSL MODEM MULTIUSER CONFIGURATION
i updated the version using the update package...and mah total lan setting got destoyed...and now mah link is not stable even for a second but am still able to connect to the net in the blinking link...so can anyone suggest how to stabilise the link???:eek:

A flickering link usually refers to some problem in the telephone line. Just get the line checked by those BSNL linemans !

ensure that all your telephones are connected after the splitter..for testing purpose, disconnect all telephones temporarily and see if you are getting disconnected..

:) a simple check of BROADBAND ROUTER problem is to connect the broadband line directly With an ordinary ROUTER and not connecting the phone line with it. Frequent disconnection problem is a problem of wires, joint box etc.

but the bsnl line man modified mah settings from ppoe to bridge...n also wen i tried over ppoe it didnt connect...but bridge is being connected...

post a screenshot of the WAN Page of your modem.. what error message do you see in the status page when you try pppoe?
