Hi Guys,

I am using bsnl FTTH in my home. And the router is provided by them.

Recently I wanted to change my Wi-Fi password and when I tried logging into my wifi modem it seemed that the password and username has been modified and i was unable to enter.

So I reset the modem and entered into the modem page using the default password. Then found that the bsnl configuration settings have gone. So I contacted my provider and informed the same. He told that he'll come back shortly.

I removed the router and again connected it. This time internet was working .To my surprise when I tried logging into the modem I couldn't it said that the username and password doesn't match. I was shocked to know that they can access my modem and change the router password.

So I called him again and asked him for the router username and password to change the wifi password. But he refused to say stating that if log in then the settings will be erased again. I'm sure it is not correct.

But I am worried that if I cannot access my router then why am I even paying them.

Can someone clarify things to me

You are paying them for internet service. Not for log in capability to your router. That said, it is your right to be able to access your OWN PERSONAL router, and in your case, THEY have provided the router. They are not obligated to share admin details for the router, but I don't see any harm in sharing a sub-admin userspace that will allow you to change SSID or password settings.

As for your doubt whether they can access your router, the answer is: probably no. They don't gain anything from having access to your router. Rather the router is automatically configured to fetch user specific settings from BSNL's servers so that they can provision the PPPoE details remotely.

It varies from place to place and ISP to ISP. On my airtel there's no such restriction. Also my friend has BSNL FTTH, I was the one who setup his router provided by BSNL (I mean user configs) and there never was a problem. BSnl guys were friendly enough to share all admin and ssid passwords when they came for install and later I changed them as per my wish. But yeah it's disappointing that they follow such practices.
I don't think just login to router will erase any settings.
If there's any bsnl office nearby go there and make a noise.
