VADODARA: After launching 3G services in the city, the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is all set to roll out fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) networks in the city soon.

"We have already started technical tests for launching FTTH services, which is a revolutionary concept that will allow high-speed broadband access, enabling downloads of basic internet access service, video and audio on demand, IPTV and virtual classrooms," principal general manager of BSNL's Vadodara circle Ramakant Sharma told TOI on Sunday. The services will be commercially launched in the city within 10 days, he said.

"Built on gigabyte passive optical technology (GPON), FTTH networks transform voice, data and entertainment experiences in the living room," said Sharma, adding that FTTH provides mind-boggling internet speeds, several times faster than average speeds offered to home connections now.

Sources suggest that apart from Vadodara, telecom service provider will launch FTTH in cities like Ahmedabad in Gujarat around the same time.

Sharma added that the telecom service provider has received overwhelming response to 3G GSM mobile services that was launched on July 21 in the city. "Since the time it was launched, around 8,000 customers have been added. While around 5,000 existing 2G customers have migrated to 3G, there are additional 3,000 new customers who are availing these services," said Sharma.
