u can at least hope to get 25mbit and more....enough for our speedy :turtle:BSNL as well India !!!
hope to see some decent speed increases soon.....

That is assuming that they don't artificially limit the speeds like they do on their existing ADSL plans, of course.

If I had to make a prediction, you can probably expect them to have tiered speeds (if they do unlimited) at costs maybe a tiny bit cheaper than their FTTH plans and data plans that are like their existing data plans although delivered faster. I hope to be pleasantly surprised by them doing some nice deals on VDSL :)

Only issue is: VDSL CPEs are quite expensive compared to ADSL ones. Probably even from ZTE. Here in NZ we can only get Thomson (sold by most for around $400 + tax) or ZyXEL (sold for around $250 + tax) whereas you can pick up a fairly nice Netgear ADSL2+ router with 802.11n WiFi for $79 or so including tax (today's exchange rate is about Rs37 = NZ$1)

^the prices look quite steep and may be a result of low volume retail selling.

In that case we have hope. :)

Unless for streaming videos, I am quite happy with my 512 Kbps connection. After all, we are from a poor country in the clutches of corruption. It won't be fair to expect speeds in Mbps.

But times are changing, we cannot avoid streaming data any more. Especially when many services are available as streaming videos and audio.

Yeah hope.... thanks to chinnese they hammer wholesale prices like shit
just got this one while searching for VDSL modems New Huawei SmartAX MT900 VDSL CPE / VDSL MODEM | eBay A modem for 25$, now what else do u want !!:Mates:

hmm. When sold in bulk, the prices will come down. In India there will be many takers if they offer it at a decent price.

Dunno. These models similarly priced in Australia, and they buy in a bit larger volumes than we (NZ) do. In both countries, they don't really get sold "over the counter" in shops - they're sold by the Telco itself who I assume is buying in bulk - quantities of 10,000 at a time.

They retail a bit cheaper in Europe, but not significantly.

Well... ZyXEL is Taiwanese - they're in constant competition with the Chinese to deliver a better product at a better price :D

Except that this modem is the wrong type of VDSL - it's VDSL1, not VDSL2 (which has a maximum range of 300m)... and it only supports 15mbit/s maximum throughput.

I did manage to find a few brands selling at around $100 retail - ZTE is probably about here too. But the point is that they're still more expensive than ADSL modems.

There are cheaper VDSL modems around the world - it varies widely by brand, but we're not "allowed" to import them because devices connected to the phone network are supposed to have a "telepermit". It's kind of a quality control thing. Good for the network, a little bad for the consumer.

Interestingly, our CPEs aren't too much more than $100.

Hope BSNL and govt. utilize available bandwidth effectively in future. We are not getting benefit of submarine cable(SAFE) at kochi. Smart-city project is delayed again and again.

SAFE isn't a government project, and BSNL has no control whatsoever over this cable.

It's also not very relevant to India since it's an African cable system and the majority of Indian traffic in that direction is heading to Europe, which doesn't like to take the long way around. Also prices on SAFE are insane - even more insane than on SMW4 and others. We think Indian telcos are greedy: let's take a moment of silence for South Africa!

The cable you need to be concerned about in Kochi is SMW3 since it hits everywhere most traffic needs to go: Singapore & Hong Kong (where it can meet with trans-pacific cables to the US); Italy, France & UK (for that European goodness) and Australia. Pity it's a bit old and has limited bandwidth compared to the newer bigger ones.

For the record, I don't think the other two main landing points for cable systems (Mumbai & Chennai) are seeing as much benefit as they should be from each respective system.

@mgcarley
Thanks for sharing your knowledge about SAFE and SMW3. So SAFE is expensive and SMW3 is old. Anyway landing points mumbai, chennai and Kochi are not utilizing bandwidth as IT hubs like Hydrabad and Bangalore do.

This pretty much goes for most of the country, IMO. Even if they continue to inflict FUPs on customers, most ISPs *should* be able to offer higher speeds than they currently do.
