Car Free Day in Gurgaon

Gurgaon administration is great. Can't provide public transport. Can't provide parking space. Let's ban cars from the road!

As if people have few tensions in their lives. Now they need to find a parking space for their car at far off places and then catch a bus or rent a cycle to reach their offices!

Now Tuesdays are car-free days in Gurgaon

Come September 22, the Millennium City will observe car-free day every Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to encourage people to use alternative modes of transport.

Though the whole city will celebrate the initiative, four major corridors -- DLF Cyber City, Cyber Park area, Golf Course Road and Electronic City in Udyog Vihar-IV -- have been identified to focus on the campaign. The idea is to give an experience of car-free streets to the people and persuade them to use sustainable modes of transport. It will save an average of 2.6 kg of greenhouse gas emissions per person per day.

A meeting of all stakeholders was held this past week to decide on the course of action for the D-day. The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), the Municipal Council of Gurgaon (MCG), the Gurgaon Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon came together in support of the initiative.

Meanwhile it is still not compulsory in Gurgaon to make the ground floor dedicated parking in new constructions. Gurgaon administration is probably waiting for people to shoot each other over parking space before they realize the need for it like Delhi.

And of course, you can buy ten cars even though you have parking space for just a Nano at your home. Roads around your house are made for your personal parking! If there are no space, just erect a gate in the name of security and park your cars in front of it!

Very soon we may need Congestion Tax like London. But first local govt should provide better local transport.

Yup. This is basically a lottery for autowallas as people would still need to reach their office.

Think it is a noble initiative with no planning or foresight ..getting calls from my friends in ggn saying one of the worst traffic snarls they have ever witnessed in years! ..last reported was a major standstill from ambience mall to signature tower ..
