well, can anyone name a few websites where I can get software for linux? say a audio editor or photo editor which are not part of basic ubuntu or mandriva packages?

mmm. the fact is that if it is not available through apt on ubuntu, its unlikely to be good/popular enough... add third party repository and you can access almost everything that is available on the platform.

audio editor no idea.photo editor is GIMP! May already be there with Ubuntu@Sushubhwhy getmail? fetchmail cud have done the job too.

if you need debs , GetDeb - Software for Ubuntu Linux is a nice place to look

GetDeb - Software for Ubuntu Linux for .debs as in debian and ubuntu ,mepis etc

check
ATrpms , livna etc for fedora ,mandriva etc sites.

unlike window$ ,there is almost no need to search net for s/w .most of `em are available in apt repo.
