if they break the seal and open it up? of course. if they just use it like a regular drive trying to recover data using software tools? probably not. :D

and man, it's time to consider online backup. i have always recommended backblaze.

If i give it for data recovery - will the replacement/repair warranty be void ??
My Seagate 1 TB hard disk crashed :(
Heard that 1 TB(released first) had problems. When did u buy this?

Around 2 years back

from what i remember the initial 1TB disks had issues that were fixed with firmware upgrades. but i think the customer had to download and install these updates manually. not sure if windows downloaded these through windows updates as it should. in any case, you can avail the warranty in its current form i believe. but after data recovery? unlikely.

I have my external harddisk of 500 GB lying unused. It is detected by OS but it cant open folders, there will be huge click sounds. Tried using some softwares, didnt work. I have all my work, pics and many other important things. Most of them are backed up but certain things were not. Cant go to professional help since its expensive and further I dont trust them :PAnyways will discard it soon. Any ideas of how to dispose electronic waste?

recycling of electronic goods... not very popular in india. Nokia centers have a box where you can drop your dead phones. but i think they are only accepting nokia branded devices. in the end, since you do not get anything in return, it is not a popular initiative.

Call up the Seagate service center and ask them about data recovery options. If you get data recovery done from one of their partners, the warranty will remain valid.
