:D

Guys I know what aspect ratio is and what settings should be used. And yes I have seen DISH and Tata Sky DTH in other setups too. There are other people complaining too. I know what I am talking about when I say the picture quality is bad. Streaming video can have stray pixels going bad here and there but “This” problem is due to the bandwidth. The video is too much compressed.

Some of you would love this DTH stuff because your cable was so bad that anything with clearer picture is welcome. You probably won't care about picture dynamics because anything would look DVD quality to you after the bad cable episode. And of course many of you may have smaller 21” which I presume may go perfectly well with this. Some of you may even realize this after using DTH for 6-7 months because the initial euphoria will fizzle out by then.

Another thing I discovered, which yes I checked with DISH helpdesk and also my neighbours and friends who have DTH. The DTH signals go down as soon as there is any thunderstorm or rain in Delhi. The signal level just starts dropping and goes down to 0 at times. This is happening every time it rains in Delhi. DISH helpdesk says \"yes it is a problem from our side. It will get resolved in 2-3 hours\". 2-3 hours??? But the signals resume as soon as the thicker rain clouds have cleared out.

Yes I did see the signal strength in the menu section. I don't care about how silly they've made the menu but channel surfing should be simpler like it was earlier. I am learning to remember the channel numbers now, so I can jump to them directly. This is a pain.

I understand your concern, dishtv has about 7Ku band transponders on NSS 6[1] satellite, IIRC.

Each transponder can take upto 10 channels, but with compression they can air upto 12.

So doing basic maths, 7 transponders * 12 channels = 84 channels capacity

But they are offering upto 150 channels, you can imagine the compression which they are doing.

Also, because its a non native Indian satellite, it might not cover entire India properly like Insat-4A which tataSky is on, no wonder you might face signal issues when there is heavy weather conditions.

hmm... thn will dish ever be able to increase their no. of channels ne further witout increasing their compression and reducing quality??and does quality of DTH services get affected by increasing no. of users?

The more the quantity of channels the less the quality.

Amount of customers doesnt affect the quality.

There are some serious issues raised here.
If someone would write up a proper organized note, it could be send to TRAI.

Copies should also be marked to both DishTV and Tata Sky, so that they are aware that the citizens are going to persist in making an issue of bad product and service.

The first issue is the non-interchangability of the STB. This is against the regulations. Also the STB shouild rightly be offered on rent, so one is free to check out the competition when ever.

The signal strength is the next issue. This can be documented in a table of strenght verses date-time for different areas-cities or zones.

The un-neccessary surfing to hunt channels is what even a half-wit would not call user friendly.

The lack of various channels, is very bad. They cannot launch service with this handicap or atleast they should not charge monthly rent till they get their act together.

Citizens have to enforce their needs, this asking for payment up front is the first sign of a scam. No where in india is service paid for before getting it. Do you pay for your food before you eat in in a restuarant, or pay of newspaper before you get it, and so on.

Best wishes.

well said... interoperability is the big issue.if it is made mandatory for operators to provide equipments wich can be used wit all DTH operators, thn the DTH scene in india wuld revolutionise.ppl can hav the option to use different operator services every month and continue with the best one tat too without buying separate STBs.

hmm.. atleast they can intro stb in categories.like at 1: a basic 1 . wich can give u only channels2: shows all channels + sum additional features(like active from Tata Sky)3. all channels + sum feature wich maybe introduced by dish (if any)4. supports all features by tatasky and dish :) (might be expensive thn others)

hmmm...good suggestion, however, I think DISH TV's response to signal compression maybe something like this. They would say that they are being forced to carry mandatory 30+ DD-free to air channels and that's the main reason why they have to compress the rest of the channels. This would weaken the case against compression.

All I can say to this is that I don't mind paying a 1000 rupees extra per year but give me quality instead of quantity. DISH TV please get more transponders!!

BTW I have learned to align the DISH antennae. My cable WALA had messed up my dish on the building roof. When I called DISH helpdesk, they as usual asked me to get lost and contact my dealer, who in turn wanted me to contact the dish service center and blah blah...so I just went up and called my wife's mobile from the roof. She kept telling me the numbers and I was able to allign the dish...

a generic stb would however result in missing features like the actve services on Tata Sky.

That might work, just like cell phones. YOu can choose cell phone and use with any cell company.

And yes some cell phones might lack features like GPRS, but if your equippmnt has features that you need, then it should not be an issue.

but u pay extra for gprs... ;) while these services are special features provided free of cost. atm atleast.
