Guys I know what aspect ratio is and what settings should be used. And yes I have seen DISH and Tata Sky DTH in other setups too. There are other people complaining too. I know what I am talking about when I say the picture quality is bad. Streaming video can have stray pixels going bad here and there but “This” problem is due to the bandwidth. The video is too much compressed.
Some of you would love this DTH stuff because your cable was so bad that anything with clearer picture is welcome. You probably won't care about picture dynamics because anything would look DVD quality to you after the bad cable episode. And of course many of you may have smaller 21” which I presume may go perfectly well with this. Some of you may even realize this after using DTH for 6-7 months because the initial euphoria will fizzle out by then.
Another thing I discovered, which yes I checked with DISH helpdesk and also my neighbours and friends who have DTH. The DTH signals go down as soon as there is any thunderstorm or rain in Delhi. The signal level just starts dropping and goes down to 0 at times. This is happening every time it rains in Delhi. DISH helpdesk says \"yes it is a problem from our side. It will get resolved in 2-3 hours\". 2-3 hours??? But the signals resume as soon as the thicker rain clouds have cleared out.
Yes I did see the signal strength in the menu section. I don't care about how silly they've made the menu but channel surfing should be simpler like it was earlier. I am learning to remember the channel numbers now, so I can jump to them directly. This is a pain.

I understand your concern, dishtv has about 7Ku band transponders on NSS 6[1] satellite, IIRC.
Each transponder can take upto 10 channels, but with compression they can air upto 12.
So doing basic maths, 7 transponders * 12 channels = 84 channels capacity
But they are offering upto 150 channels, you can imagine the compression which they are doing.
Also, because its a non native Indian satellite, it might not cover entire India properly like Insat-4A which tataSky is on, no wonder you might face signal issues when there is heavy weather conditions.
