^ Just purchase the 3G sim if you don't own one already.Since you are willing to use your phone's modem, why would you need a data card?

I know i don't need the data card, but when i went to the BSNL shop they told me that you will have to buy the Data Card and its sim in order to use it for Data Downloading. If you want to use it on your cell phone then take the normal BSNL Card ?I am totally confused now which sim to buy from them !!!!

Really? how did u find out the validity extension? i did a *123# and it gave me the same old balance and validity. The only way i know is that my account balance is not subtracted..
thanks and regards
Got SMS that my account is recharged and validity is up to 22 of May 2011

Marketing Tactics :P Just go to any of BSNL CSC and ask for 3g Sim card, it will cost you around ~200 Indian Rs :)

@^^^so you mean the normal 3G SIM Card which we use in mobile ? If yes then will it be recharged with 4200Rs to use for unlimited plan ?

Its not available in pune. I visited few centers and they are clueless about the availability.

Finally i had to settle for 3.6 modem.

Thats a plain rip off, you should have visited any bsnl authority and reported that the dealer is not giving you sim card alone, this would certainly have saved you 3-4K.

if you wish you can visit BSNL exchange, make sure you get a appointment with any BSNL P.R.O or AGM Mobile, or even GMTD(top authority of city), you have rights and they'll have to get it straight for you.
if you are lucky they can also ask the dealer to take back the modem and refund in full, else this can be easily used against that dealer, to cancel their dealership, if you have patience to follow it up correctly.

I bought a new 3G Sim & it coasted me just Rs.117(Rs.59 For Sim & Rs. 58 FRC for lifetime validity with Rs.0.5/min all india call valid for 365 Days). I also got one week unlimited download as its a new sim. Dont recharge with Rs. 120 FRC anymore use FRC Rs.58...Check out this http://www.bsnl.in/service/3G/3G_files/prepaid.htm

So cutting out all the crap....in a nutshell...I should buy a normal 3G sim for my cell phone of Rs.59 and recharge it with Rs.58(FRC), and after a week of Free bundled Data Usage , I can Recharge it with Rs.4200 to get the Rs.700 per month plan of Unlimited Data Usage without purchasing the Data Card Dongle .Is it RIGHT ???/P.S - I will use the 3G internet through my Cell phone only.

3G vs HSDPA
3G is the common name for the third generation of mobile phone technologies. But instead of being a single standard, 3G is composed of multiple technologies that provide the same level of service. HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is a later addition to the 3G technologies to provide better and faster data speeds to subscribers.
3G is an improvement of the older 2G standard and introduces multiple advanced features. The most significant is video calling, which allows the two parties to see each other during the call. Another improvement is the much faster internet connection speeds that are being offered by 3G. But as more people are using the service and the demand for better and faster connection rose, HSDPA was added to 3G. HSDPA does not offer any new features like 3G did, it simply offered a faster connection that the 3G features can take advantage of.
HSDPA also provides better latency compared to the older technologies of 3G. Latency is the time between the request was sent and the time for the reply to get back. This might not be noticeable for most people who use their mobile phones to browse web sites, but it is quite important for people who use real-time services like VoIP. A higher latency results to lag in the voice signal or dropped packets which can deteriorate the call quality.

Implementing HSDPA is quite a big step for mobile companies who are still using the older 2G standard. As with all 3G technologies, HSDPA is not compatible with 2G and requires a new network altogether. But for companies who already have 3G networks deployed, implementing HSDPA is relatively cheap and simple that there is really no argument against deploying it. Aside from the network side, mobile phones must have HSDPA capabilities in order to take advantage of the added speed. Just because a mobile phone advertises that it is capable of 3G does not mean that is capable of performing at HSDPA speeds.
Summary:
1. 3G is a group of technologies for mobile communications while HSDPA is an extension of the 3G technologies to provide faster speeds
2. 3G introduced new features like video calling and online TV
3. HSDPA provides better latency compared to the older 3G technology
4. HSDPA is relatively easy and cheap upgrade to existing 3G networks
5. There are mobile phones that have 3G support but not HSDPA
