Wi-fi hardware provided by Airtel is 3rd grade. They are still stuck with 802.11a/b/g, when the world has moved on to 802.11n/ac.
While it may not matter on internet browsing(where speeds much lesser than 54mbps their routers support), it matters if you are going to have your own WLAN and use it to transfer files.
IIRC, A router with 802.11n supports a throughput of 300mbps compared to the ones airtel provides(which have a theoritical throughput of 54mbps).
And most users have no need for an n router forget an ac router. People who have multiple devices connected over LAN in the house are probably technical enough to understand that not all routers are created equal.
The Free Wifi modem that they gave me was full of crap. The wi-fi totally went bonkers after 6 months.
Now I've been using a D-Link one for 1.5 years and happy.
