Google navigation is what comes with google maps, as I said you can pre cache the whole city map so it wont download the map while navigating, just use the internet for route calculations, traffic data etc. My rough guess is it won't use more than 4-5mb for a 10KM trip. Ill try and measure the data consumed next time I use it.
I dont think the mobile device will remember the cache for long time. Which device are you using?

correction for manu, google naviagation is UNAVIALBLE IN india, i tried to use it many times with fail. I used to save maps from google maps, but it used to take lot of space around 1 gb for area which is around 1-2 square kilometer radius.
how can you save google maps into your tablet? in what format?

you go to google maps open an area, select menu on right top hand and select save maps for offline use and then select area using square it provides on map, you can zoom in and out of that square making area to save large or small and then say download/save and thats it. next time you open google maps, check saved maps in menu. I have not used saved maps out of tablet , so not sure which format is that.

yes, by cache I meant what he was referring to, cache would be the wrong term, you can download the maps. For the whole of Delhi NCR, the map was ~70mb in size.

No idea about the level of detail it has.
The voice is the same as what is on the phone for Text to Speech. I think for US English its male and for UK English its female. or vice versa.
i've been using google maps tool in iOS from an year. i dont think they have started this in weeks. I'm using google map tool almost for an year.

Google Maps and Google Navigation are different things.
Maps allows you to find locations, routes etc. In navigation, you can set your destination and it will guide you to that location, through instructions both displayed on the screen and spoken out, like take a right turn after 300m on Mahatma Gandhi Road etc. Google Maps on iOS never had this navigation feature. This is what was enabled for India on 5th September.

Click the Menu button >> Make Available offline >> then select the map area you want(see the pic) and then press done.

on tablet I have google maps as different product and navigation as different app, I dont think ios has google navigation app.manu can please check the level of details on map. cause for 59 Mb I dont know how much it can fir, lets try from chankyapuri to airport is it possible for you? I cant test it,
