My maxtor 750GB has been replaced three times over the course of 3 years. I keep it disconnected and stored away now.
Can i post a link to another forum?

that is one reason i tend to stick with the cloud for backup of important data. there are a couple of services that can backup your entire set up for as low as 5 dollars a month. it is worth investing if you value your data. of course not a feasible option if the only content you worry about is your download collections.

not a big fan of external disks that requires a power adapter. you have to be very careful with them. i have already lost a 500GB unit.

What is the disadvantages in external power adapter?

FInally i bought 500GB Seagate External Hard disc for Rs. 3600/-. USB 2.0 plug and play, no need any power supply for this device, we can use it like Pen Drive.

some external drives are actually two disks in one enclosure. so you see two individual drives instead of one. i guess you got a single 500GB disk. multiple disks usually requires an external power adapter.
