GNOME 3 may be too little too late for that project... It will be a fight between KDE, Win7 and MacOS for desktop dominance (ya I know Windows already owns this) and GNOME will be left in the dust if they don't pull up their socks and innovate...
according to some early users (on ubuntuforums) gnome 3 had nice smooth desktop animations/effects thanks to the "clutter" library, but they are trying to redefine the desktop paradigm. its almost like it will be more suitable for netbooks and small screens... kde ftw against win7!

i seriously doubt that gnome3 will be coming anytime soon...i'd give em 1 more year or so...

Fun to install bit by bit and setup/configure everything manually. Boots really fast, faster than Ubuntu Jaunty - under 20 seconds from grub menu to KDE login screen.
The only hassle is slow broadband really frustrates you because you have to wait in between for things like X, KDE etc to download which takes hours...
They have the best wiki pages I have ever seen, you can (I did) install everything for the first time and solve any issues by just reading/searching the wiki, no need to even go to forums/mailing lists so far
Check out: Arch Linux browse it thoroughly/carefully to get a good idea of what the distro is about.
