All this talk put aside, is this STB available ANYWHERE? I called up Dish TV and they asked me to check with resellers since they don't have it themselves :D

Can we watch the hd channels by plugging a lcd monitor say a 22 incher via VGA/DVI with the STB ?

it depends on what type of video port the STB has

mostly it won't have VGA and DVI port but you can buy a converter Cable which will allow you to watch it on your monitor

Nope, DD has always broadcasted big events such as Football world cup, Olympics, etc. And the reason they get broadcast rights is due to the mass amount of people that have the channel.

Olympics is another thing as it is almost a full day event and no other channel broadcasts it as they can't broadcast a thing full day with few ads

World cup is broadcasted by the biggest sports channel in India and so they pay for the rights and Doordarshan shouldn't be allowed

There are still many parts of India where the cable tv has not reached, so DD should telecast the mega events such as world cup. You cant allow them not to telecast just because they haven't paid for the rights, and I was reading somewhere that they share the money(profits) with the official broadcasters which has bagged the rights. Not sure though !

they did it with neo on the matches they shared with them. that's what i know about it. some series... they had to show the same ads but got some money from the original broadcaster. i think the deal is made between DD and the official broadcaster.

DD sharing ad money is a joke. Yes, they do give the rights holder their share. BUT the dumb @$$e$ at DD sell their ad spots for almost 70 - 80% discounted rates as opposed to the original rights holder. So all these guys get is a pittance compared to what they invested.

It was with Ten Sports when India was touring Pakistan in 2004, DD was taking the feed with Ten sports with there ads.

well the sad thing is that the operators are ready to give out millions despite the fact that DD would get it for literally free. these operators need to create a cartel and get the rights for cheap. share amongst each other. so that the boards running cricket and other popular sports do not get filthy rich doing practically nothing.
