To compare 720p vs 1080i, during a football game, look at the white lines on the ground, especially the ones vertical on the screen. As the camera moves, you can see interlacing artifacts in 1080i. In 720p, the artifacts are not there. You cannot get away from these issues at all. Broadcasters will be happy if you watch in 1080i as it saves them bandwidth. For real quality in sports, always watch 720p. Don't get fooled by the larger number :-)

The perceived visual difference between 1080p and 720p is not large enough for the broadcaster to justify the exponentially higher cost to record, store, and broadcast in 1080p. Its like 7, then 10, then 15 mega-pixel cameras. 5 mega pixel is more than enough for casual photography. Anything more when displayed on a screen is not visually better, so why go for higher mega pixel and waste storage space?
 
I've been watching HD channels here in the US for almost a year now - and they are all broadcast in 1080i. They look amazing ! I haven't seen any blurring during high speed scenes.

Glad to see HD in India.. We've waited long enough !

yes 1080i is good but not as good as a clear progressive image

720p is more clear but if you have bigger TV then 720p will automatically be made 1080i

i and many others are not getting fooled by a bigger numbers.

yes 720p is good and it saves broadcasters the bandwidth

but 1080p is far better,especially if you have a 40' INCH or bigger TV.the norma people who don't look at the details don't see this but peoplen who play Video Games,watch BLU-RAY,etc can easily see this because they are used to 1080p

yes most channels are 720p/1080i but many are going 1080p.it will be slow but it will happen.

and the perceived difference between 1080p and 720p is MASSIVE,you have to blind if you can't perceive the sharpness of the image

it is more than enough for a casual person but it still matters to people like me

"why go higher?" - its like you are saying you get 10mbps speed and you are staisfied,well that is a good speed but if you are streaming a 1080p video and along with it using other things,its not enough

For a static image, yes, but for a moving image, it won't matter much - all this for my reference 50" TV. If you have an even larger TV, yes, it'll matter. It'll also depend on how far you are from the TV. For TVs upto and around 50", with a viewing distance of 10-15', I would say it won't matter. Just my 2 cents :-)
 
w8, is discovery HD 1080i or 1080p? i read it was 1080p.

i know recording time is less but that does not mean 1080p shouldn't be there.you are saying like just because PVR recording time is less 1080p is bad.

they haven't switched but offer 1080p,1080i,720p,480p.i will get you the channels.they are very few but there are

it matters even if you are sitting 10-15',i can easily pick out the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 30+ inch TV

i play PS3 games and look out for these details

i kno a normal consumer wouldn't but many other do.most indian consumers won't figure out much difference between SD and HD but that doesn't mean we shouldn't get better services

match fixing!

final group matches are held together so that the teams do not get to know what happens if they lose or win. they need to go for the win in any case as the result of the other match is not out by then.

good policy. i wish cricket could have a similar policy for tournaments like these. :D
