for basic purpose this would be more than enough. but if you can get the 2/4GB model, get that. pi has a lot of use cases apart from pi-hole. and after a while, you would realize that you need more performance. you can use it for torrenting, nas and so much more. for pi-hole alone, you can probably get one of the older model and save money.

Thanks for your reply mate. But hard disk and torrenting is fantastically done by my Asus router. Their firmware is absolutely amazing.

If your router supports Merlin try AB-Solution aka Diversion which is much better especially when it comes to https ads and supports
plethora of popular scripts

I'm thinking that as well but I got Asus rt 18u which officially doesn't support the same.

But this does and I'm sure I should switch or not

Also cpu usage gets too high, I've got atleast 15-20 connections also using 5ghz router separately connected as access point. (mainly IOT)

So maybe PI hole will save some resources, not a bad idea by admin to switch everything to pi and let router handle WiFi and Nat

I have pi-hole set up on an old Synology NAS (215j) so have avoided buying a raspberry pi till now.
Can someone enlighten, is it ok to buy the bare board? Why is a power adapter optional, can I run the pi through usb power or what? Also a model like 3b+, can it run 24X7 without a heat sink? The pibox combo kits on Amazon are pretty expensive, can't spend that much.

Pihole doesn't stress the cpu much so a heatsink won't be necessary

Pi can be run with any microusb cable and a power adapter so it's not necessarily needed.

As long as you put your pi in a safe location it should work fine without a case, though i do recommend getting one since i don't like the exposed board

Thanks for that info, maybe I'll give the bare board a shot. The only problem with running pi-hole on the NAS is the NAS never seems to sleep. And it will be possible to do other projects on the pi.
