Even 256mb ram will be enough for normal pihole. I got it 2 yrs ago with a new user coupon. Prices have increased a bit. But can get it for around 1k

Just see which one you can get cheaper orange pi zero or Raspberry pi zero. either should work fine except I dont think raspberry has a lan port.

I've also ordered one Rpi 4 from bezos uncle's shop. To setup Dns sink for adblock. Hopefully setup will be straightforward.

Maybe it can be useful for encoding and storing feed from 1-2 ip cameras or some other home automation stuff in future...

Can you please elaborate on the ip camera setup.
I'm in thoughts of doing something similar,if you share the details it would be quite helpful.

@vignesh_venkatesan , it's just an idea I was thinking of.

One was to get some ip camera online.

The second was to get a raspberry zero and a camera module and build it into a fake camera case. Then use rpi 4 to do some basic x264 compression and store the video into a nas. This video should explain it better Linus rpi camera

They have wifi. So no cabling required as long as you have a good signal strength and ideally a gigabit router (in case). You will need to make power connection setups.

Might I recommend adding a few smart lights surrounding the house. And maybe a motion sensor... Which when tripped launches a drone from the terrace Imagine the poor soul who dared pry around at night and saw this

Using Rpi as a server is a great idea.
I feel that using pi zero based cameras is too much of an hassle.
Is it possible to use off the shelf cameras along with motion eye os on rpi like Linus used in his video.

@vignesh_venkatesan Yes I think it should work for a normal IP camera. But maybe the camera already compresses / reduces frames. Maybe the camera itself has an option to save video at this nas location. So pi 4 may not have to do anything. I don't know much about existing IP cameras. Esp reg supporting motionOS.

Do note there are a ton of options available on Amazon. Wipro, mi, some others... It was very confusing which to select. If you find some good link / good reviews do share the same. And do update your progress. Many will be interested in configuring a good ip camera at reasonable price.

I'm seriously considering Mi Cameras and researching about the same though I'm not fully sold yet.
My ideal solution for my needs is to find a generic ip Camera with poe support with software nonsense in them and use rpi to encode and store it in my Nas.
But for someone who doesn't wish to spend much money can definitely go with mi security cameras.

You can use shinobi on rpi for ip cameras . it's a great software. Just remember to use a camera that supports ONVIF and can encode video. Because rpi can't handle encoding.

I use Yi cams. Limited but Work great.
