Free Internet and Universal Portability

This is just posting interesting thoughts i had which can be benfical to all :

1. Free Internet: The topic is long debated one with many controversies. However what i feel is that ISPs should be allow a decent amount of traffic so that web browsing can be acheived , UPI payments can be made, and whatsapp messaging as well. Because these 3 are major factors which affects us on real time when our data pack is over. I belive ISPs can easily achieve this by having QOS setup.

2. Universal Portability: We live in a day where there are many options around us for Internet and calling. Currently MNP is there if we want to change our operator. But what if we can have a universal sim out and then we are free to chose any operator plan once existing plan is over. For eg, let's say currently i am on 30 days BSNL plan, what if i get the freedom to choose a VI plan for next 30 days without the porting process itself? . I believe this way can minimize a lot of e waste as well mainly give the consumers more flexibility to choose their provider.

Regarding free internet, I should think that teaman had a claim/ plan/ campaign to cover the country with free Wi-Fi hotspots. Regarding universal portability, it is called eSIM.

@phoenix10386 Regarding the second point , as of now, any sim , be it esim or physcial , one has to go through a certain porting process for changing the operator. What i meant was to completely get rid of that, give the freedom to the customers to recharge any plan of any operator. The sim/esim has to be recognized by all operators universally.

I understand that, but that would require the government to trust citizens and not think of them as criminals. eSIM activation at home (Jio iActivate, Vi Self-KYC eSIM, etc.) were removed some time ago. What you are talking about will flip and trip the government.

Ideally, the process should be as simple as activating your SIM number after verification - be it physical SIM number or eSIM number. Again, that would require the government to trust citizens.

Regarding your first thought, it'd be a decrement to the internet users in our country. What you are mentioning strictly undermines net neutrality in this country. While I am in for offering public wifi but limiting it for a few services is a severe wrong course of action. Railwire used to run public APs in a lot of railway stations and if my memory serves me right public wifi was very common in public places in metro cities but the FUP limits given is a different conversation. Bandwidth is cheaper than ever and APs too. The reason we dont see public wifi much these days is i belive unlimited 5g.

@f0r3he4d Its true , internet should be free and open to all , but still there are situations for which additional bandwidth can help out .Unlimited 5g is only available if you choose to recharge above a certain threshold, but allowing traffic for essentials can help out a lot in case of emergencies. At the very least 2 or 3 mbps is sufficent to do a upi payment

@phoenix10386 There is a way if government centrailizes the SIM process itself i.e, any operators can get issue new sim cards which is from a single independent authority and the same can conduct KYC verfication process for the individual annually

@Lucifer96 UPI already does not require internet. IIRC you need a phone call or text to do it offline.
