GST is designed to hurt the middle class. Multiple rates for same product segment clearly states that the government believes that poor people do not eat in restaurants with AC. Do not buy shoes worth more than 500 bucks. Do not buy cloths worth more than 1000 bucks. As soon as someone does, the tax rate doubles. It does not hurt the upper class much as much as it hurts the middle class. Poor people do not use napkins but they do use sindoor and pooja samagri. Tax rate pretty much highlights it.
