on ICS is there any option to only display contacts with phone numbers? it was there in GB but I cant seem to find it in ICS.

yes that version is pretty old. you should upgrade to I9100XWLP3 .

I had a question before upgrading - what needs to be taken care of, so that my installed apps stay intact?When i had bricked my phone & installed Gingerbread, i hadnt lost my apps. But after installing ICS, the apps had all gone. I can see there are 4 things that can be installed using Odin. So which of them should be ignored, so that the apps stay intact?

Some firmwares require a wipe while others dont. on the Galaxy note official firmware thread, its mentioned which ones require and which don't. try looking through that firmware's thread to see whether it requires one or not.

Ok, so just checked it out.....it requires a Factory reset!

Put your device in Recovery MODE (Home + Volume up + Power)
Wipe Data/Factory reset
Wipe Cache
