Yes, but last time I checked, such custom colors didn't work on Kitkat. Even, OS notifications acted randomly. Had to use third party app to manage notification light.

I am using notification LED app since long now. Have no idea when exactly Google resolved this thing. Most likely in Lollipop update itself.

Now that I flashed factory image and wiped everything, phone is running with only tapatalk and whatsapp other than preinstalled google apps.

Attention to detail in Lollipop is commendable! Alarm clock app changes color accordingly to time and nearly relates to color of sky at that time.

Yes, possible. Nexus 5 in particular with Stock google ROM had issues. Even AOSP builds could handle multicolor nicely.

Even though it works as intended now, I will eventually start using third party app for numerous customizations. In Notification LED app, you can even set brightness, solutions when conflicts of notification occurs, frequency of blinking etc. Can even set Gmail notification according to label or whatsapp notification color per contact etc.

hehe. the amount of time it would take for me to remember what the light is for, it's not worth it for me :D hopefully active notifications would become a common feature on future devices.

I agree. But it has technical limitations on LCD. And AMOLED is not widespread and inferior to LCD when actual characteristics of display are compared to theoretical best.
