ah ok. i cannot think of any reason for these two issues i am on stable so it's not like it's behaving differently on beta or dev builds.

It's greyed out for me too, but I get the notifications.

Ok. It makes sense. Google Now is greyed out because it does not have a packaged app that you can open independently. There is already an independent icon (Mr. Jingles) for the same.
