Yeah. I was referring to the XMPP protocol which is used by Google Talk. Incidentally Facebook also uses the same but ironically blocks third party messengers on my account at least.
What I was trying to say is that they are likely to use XMPP for Babel. It is not going to be a new service. It would just feature a new branding. And very likely merge the Google+ Messenger feature which is right now restricted to Apple iOS and Google Android devices.
Google is unlikely to launch apps for Windows Phone or even Blackberry in the near future. Forget feature phones or Symbian or other platforms. So, it would have to use an open protocol so that existing app integration would continue to work. But you get enhanced experience from official apps like Hangouts support and possibly integrated sms messaging on Android.
Just saw this... https://goo.gl/UClkm and remembered the original branding of Google+ Messenger. Huddle!
I expect Babel to get a dedicated app on Apple iOS devices. Unless of course, Google makes it a part of their Google+ app. Based on the leaked screenshots posted earlier in this thread they are making one change that is going to annoy a lot of people.
Sharing photos through the messenger would require the user to have a Google+ account. Now, I am a big fan of Google+ but even I cannot see any logic in this requirement.
