google is unlikely to touch other smartphone platforms. forget feature phones. google talk compatible apps would continue to work for the time being.
the reports about xmpp ditching were sort of complicated. google would still accept connections from third party apps. it would not connect to third party xmpp servers.
it's called xmpp federation i think. google is discarding support for it.

So now no "simple" gtalk from Phones - Android phones?
And what will happen for Nimbuzz/IM+ clients? will they continue to work as earlier?

Nothing is breaking. What I meant was that Google Talk would not communicate with third party XMPP servers. Like it used to do earlier.

I am still not able to understand "Hangout" app in Android. Does this app support chatting with only those who have made profile on Google+ and updated to Hangout?

But what if somebody is not having G+ account, and simply uses classic "Gtalk" PC application? would we not able to chat with that contact through Hangout app?
I have 2 Gmail accounts, out of which I have enabled G+ on only 1 account. Another 1 I use only in Gtalk/Gmail. I tried to ping another account from Hangout app, but I was not able to ping that account.

Either I am novice to idea of Hangout as I have never used it earlier, or I am missing some feature?

So far I only used IM+ and Nimbuzz clients on Nokia Symbian and WP for Gtalk, and it worked really well for me.

So, basically it works like Google Talk. People using IMO or Google Talk or Trillian would be able to talk to you just like you did before. You can use the same apps even if you use Hangouts on Android or Chrome or Google+.
In future, it is likely to integrate with the SMS app on Android devices.

This question is related to Hangouts app for Chrome. Wanted to know something.
When you click on a username... Can you start typing a message right away? At my end, the focus never lands in the chat box. I have to click on it to start typing or press tab and shift-tab.

Right. It's annoying. Even annoying is that I could not find any feedback option for Chrome version of Hangouts.
