Like google play store updates, there is the stock version shipped with device under system/app and the new update is a small part(or a full new independent apk) with is stored in data/app - Same case for talk/Hangouts

hehe. even resetting the phone did not help.
now i would have to enter around 10 different complicated passwords in different apps.

Now there's a note in the description of the app on Play Store.

NOTE: If you aren't yet able to install Hangouts on your phone or tablet, or the Play Store "Open" button takes you to the old Talk app, hang tight, we are rolling out Hangouts to everyone over the course of several days. Rest assured Hangouts will be available soon for all Android 2.3+ devices, tablets included!

I know it is still being rolled out. I am just annoyed that I had it and I lost it. LOL.
I know it would arrive in the coming days. I am not concerned about that. It's just that the old Talk is hideous and I cannot use it

same here @chromanoic.. it takes to old google talk app but play store shows as hangout.. :/
