netfreak>you have a Wlan card in your PC too? Mine is ethernet connected.

I tried both your suggestions, but nothing is happening. But when I use the network mapper in Vista i get this picture. Just that there is no live hyperlink from the switch or the Orion icons.

Orion is my desktop and TheBrain my laptop :-)

Hey folks , I sorted out the issue. Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. Like they say, most solutions are simple and I guess I've been trying nearly 1 month now to sort it out without looking in the right direction. Well, something about netfreak's telnetting suggestion got me thinkin and I checked my ZoneAlarm settings and Lo !Behold found that I'd set the Intranet settings (Trusted Zone) protection to High. I set it to Medium and Viola ! I was able to connect my two systems. Of course, there are some Sharing level glitches, but I can iron them out later, I guess. netfreak> I have Vista on my lappie and a not-so-official XP Pro on my PC. And yep, I'd looked at the page (in fact I've been through most of Vista tech pages since I bought the lappie with Vista installed :-) ), but obviously missed something. I still have access denied errors if I Login without a common UN / PW in both systems, but I'm able to access most Shared drives/folders on my Deskie from my laptop, except the vice-versa gives me errors. Since ZoneAlarm is yet to release a version for Vista, I'm using the default Windows firewall in my laptop. Though Vista firewall is way ahead of XO Pro's , it still is not as configurable or informative as ZA. Thanks once again folks for the support

cool. For avoiding common UN / PW, you can create a shortcut (or add a new network place) these things can store passwords so you can enter a UN different from current user.
