well based on what i said in the previous page...
if someone loses x... someone else has to gain x right?
lady gains 1000. shopkeeper's friend did not lose anything as he loaned 1000 bucks and got back 1000 bucks.
so the shopkeeper lost 1000 bucks.

Who got the extra 200 rupees :D

But he paid rs 200 for the X product acquired.
The question legitimizes the cost price (rs 200) as it rules out any profit margin but does not rules out the acquisition cost.
So 1200 it is

^ I was right. (approx 1250). Why do you guys don't take profit margin into the account ...
because you have not read the whole situation at all , but all others atleast have read it , amazing you are mate :playful:

I am not an IAS candidate so would not comment on the problem. However, I did face something similar.
I once got a 500 rupee fake note from a shop. This was pointed out to me at another shop. I took back the fake note and used it at another store. poor guy did not doubt it.
I know what I did was wrong, but then....

did he not get back his 200 when he got 1000 rs changed to lower denomination? and paid lady 800 and was left with 200?
now when other shopkeeper came to him , what he gave? 800 rs from his own pocket and 200 rs that he got for sale?
loss is inevitably 1000 only

I am not sure what the other guys are writing but the answer is pretty simple... Rs 2000... Question is actually very simple but twisted around to sound difficult... Shopkeeper lost 1000 to women(Rs800 cash + Rs200 goods).. Then he lost 1000 to the other shopkeeper... All he was left with was a fake Rs1000 note which is worth zero...
Moral of the story:- always check Rs 500/1000 notes before accepting :D ... This is something we learned the hard way at our petrol pump after being burned a few times...

PS man I would be really pissed if my answer is wrong... It would mean my high marks in maths were a fluke (was joint 1st in maths in north maharastra for my 10th std :P )
