I am not an IAS candidate so would not comment on the problem. However, I did face something similar.
I once got a 500 rupee fake note from a shop. This was pointed out to me at another shop. I took back the fake note and used it at another store. poor guy did not doubt it.
I know what I did was wrong, but then....
I once had a 500 rupee not that was so badly washed in rains that it had literally faded. Maybe it was a fake in the first place. I just dropped it in a monastery's donation box. Now, it may be considered nasty but from my side I had earned that money so boo hoo. Life is not fair.

I am not sure what the other guys are writing but the answer is pretty simple... Rs 2000... Question is actually very simple but twisted around to sound difficult... Shopkeeper lost 1000 to women(Rs800 cash + Rs200 goods).. Then he lost 1000 to the other shopkeeper... All he was left with was a fake Rs1000 note which is worth zero...
He also gained 1000 rupees from the same shopkeeper. 800 of which went with the women (so he did not pay that money from his pocket). And he kept the rest of the 200 rupees.

1800 ... he gives 800 to lady and keeps 200 to himself and then shopkeeper takes back 1000 from him so 800 ( money given to lady ) + 1000 ( shopkeeper takes back from him ) = 1800
I think my above answer is wrong and this is the correct answer .. none of us have taken into account the product the lady purchased ..
Another way of looking at is:
Total Spend: Rs200 + Rs800 + Rs1000
Total Receipts: Rs 1000 (from the other shopkeeper)
Total Loss = 2000 - 1000

Actually rajdeep's answer is correct, coz rs 800 given to lady, 200 for the product, rs 1000 taken back by the other shopkeeper
so rs 2000 is the loss

The shop keeper got a Rs. 1000 fake note. That he had to pay back to his friend + 200 worth items = 1200 total loss. I don't see a confusion here. Waiting for someone to comeup with any other logical answer, if there's any ...

You are missing the thing. He also took 1000 rupees from that other shopkeeper.

did he gave the lady from his pocket ? what is a loss? exchanged money given to her ? or actual money given by his own pocket?

Ok.. Could not resist.
In Math problems, simplifying is the best thing
A asks B for a loan of 1000 bucks. B borrows from C and gives to A. A disappears. B has to pay back 1000 from his pocket. Loss = 1000. This has what has happened. The fake note & products are there only to complicate things.

^ How come you ignore the Rs.200 worth items? If you lost Rs.1000 along with a new premium wallet. Wouldn't you take the wallet into account?
