How to backup SMS Messages and Contacts on an Android Smartphone?

I am going to Update my Moto Defy to Froyo in a few minutes.Could anyone tell me how to backup contacts and stuff to my PC As Users have reported contacts being wiped after the update I have to update it before the Sunrise, heh.

I have no idea about it, my brother is using two mailboxes on this phone one is Gmail and the other is his Corporate mailbox

so you cannot check if the phone contacts are updated on his gmail account? i do not use any corporate mailbox so hard for me to say

Create a spare gmail id. Use Smsbackup+ for backing up your text messages. It will backup the contact log, to your gmail id. You can also sync the contacts to this gmail id. The app i mentioned is free.

He is freaking annoying, sometime back he was like.

What a nice phone, nice apps and this and that.

He came to know that his phone is on Eclair and he started nagging me.

What is Froyo? Why am using older version? My friends are on a new version. Do something. Bleh.

I don't give a flying rat's ass to his contacts and numbers.
