HP Vista OEM on assembled PC?

Last year, I bought a HP laptop preloaded with XP Pro. Also i got a Vista Home Premium for the same under some offer at a discounted price. Now Vista is having some issues(mainly audio and webcam) on the laptop. So i uninstalled it. I was thinking if i could use that Vista on my assembled PC. Is it permitted/possible? :ashamed:Edit: Please note that I have not activated that Vista on laptop!!

i doubt oem editions would run on a diff computer. its certainly worth a try right?u wont lose the license anyways

Sushubh, I tried installing it on the assembled one. It installed and worked fine! But should i activate it? or is it any kind of illegal thing to do?

but i dont think it would be illegal. you own the license.

i think you can buy oem edition windows and office from ebay and they are legal i believe.

but i don't think you should be facing any problem as long as you are running it on a single machine.

in fact i personally want to use the vista home premium i got with my laptop on my desktop. i already have the ultimate edition at my place purchased...

i have not tried installing the Dell copy on my desktop though

On the disk it says "For use only as an upgrade to a qualifying HP PC" Also on Product key it is shown "Windows Vista Home Premium HP". Can MS figure out after i activate that this was given for an HP system? The thing is that i don't want to waste that copy! :wall:

well the point remains... the companies would enforce it on you to keep it with the laptop it was shipped with.

but these things rarely are accepted in courts

i had personally hate to waste my copy of vista home premium... considering i am realizing stuff it is lacking compared to the higher editions.

i might gift/sell it to a friend who bought an ubuntu loaded Dell. that might work well and i would not care abt the legality of the thing.

Does this mean installing on quad-core violates the agreement? :huh:

no its 2 CPUs, with any number of cores! so you can plug in 2 quad-core CPUs for a total of eight cores!
