I have the same hardware ( Huawei SmartAX MT880 modem/router and RealTek Ethernet 8139 Family PCI NIC LAN card on my system under XP without SP1 or SP2. I was successful in connecting to dataone and use the broadband connection for quite some hours on Wednesday. But some fault has cropped up either in the connection or the Server (HelpDesk is unable to identify for the last two days) and I get an error message "Error 678: Unable to connect to the Server".
My Account is only 3 days old. I got the same error message before the username and passwaord allotted by BSNL was communicated to me on phone.
Before the error message comes up there is an advice saying "opening the port" and it appears as if the system is unable to get the port opened and hence the Erro 678 follows.
BSNL is aware of this but I do not know either as to how they overcame the problem, the first time or why they have not been able to resolve the problem for the last two days. There is obviously lack of co-ordination between the DatOne staff and the local BSNL and Exchange staff who look after the Huawei Controllers installed for decentralization and cutting down the long distances with copper wires to the user locations.

I was having the same problem, on reading the sugestion in the forum itself , I was able to connect.
I just reset the modem, and switch it off for about 2 minutes unplug the lan wire and reconnected it then I restarted the system and modem, Then i was able to connect to broadband.

Yes...I am now enjoying broadband. I use MT800 with Realtek onboard Lancrad. But when I connect to net, my svchost.exe takes 100% of cpu time and my machine hangs. Is it any kind of virus attack? or any settings problem.I use windows 2000 server. Please help

I want to share the following info with correspondents of this forum. BSNL has installed a Digital Loop Contol Unit near my residence in a State Govt. Institute Building. They also have Huawi Controller installed next to it. By providing links to local users from this equipment, BSNL has cut down the lengths of the Copper Wire connections. This makes a dramatic differeence to teh speed and performance of the link. The Broadband connection is stable and gives a speed of 230 to 250 kbps.
"Opening the Port" message disappeared after they checked their equipment and its link to the DataOne Server. The link is very satisfactory now and I hope BSNL manages to keep it that way and also that the speed does not deteriorate as more users are connected to the same Controller.
