'Independence Day 2' to open 20 years after the original

The sequel to Roland Emmerich's 1996 blockbuster 'Independence Day' will now release July 1, 2016, almost exactly 20 years after the original movie hit the screens.

The original movie released on July 3, 1996. It grossed $817 million worldwide.

20th Century Fox had earlier thought of releasing the sequel July 3, 2015, but the date has now been pushed to July 1, 2016.

From what I know it was an average grosser in the US. Did well in the global market. I wonder why they felt the need to make a sequel of an average grosser 20 years later .
