Following the rapid Ku-band transponder shortage faced by the DTH Industry, as they continue providing more and more HD(High-definition) services on their platform, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has pioneered a Request For Proposal (RFP) to get answers from concerned foreign satellite operators for leasing satellites with transponders functioning in Ku and C-band frequencies. Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s office V Narayanaswamy confirmed this news.
Dish TV, which enjoys a high market share said that it will be employing four 54 MHz Ku-band transponders on AsiaSat 5 to better its HD and SD services. The extra transponder capacity on AsiaSat 5 will allow Dish TV to grow significantly in its DTH services to over 30 HD and 320 SD channels. Tata Sky, a conjunction between Tata Group and Rupert Murdoch’s Star Group, demands 12 extral transponders for growth but ISRO failed to satisfy their needs.
On condition of anonymity, an executive with a famous DTH serice provider said, “All the DTH operators want more transponder space. Isro has to speed up the satellite launches. There also should be an urgency to allow space on foreign satellites. Then only can the DTH industry expand their channel offerings.”
ISRO is cashing in big time on construction and launch of communication satellites GSAT-9 and GSAT-10, in order to raise their transponder capacity. At the moment ISRO has 187 transponders from nine Indian Communication satellites, which also includes GSAT-12. It has acquired 86.5 transponders on lease from foreign operators via its marketing wing Antrix Corporation Limited.
