If you think this whole 3g business is tough, welcome to the club!!
No need to get upset though, because most of us had our share of teething problems too and eventually got it working!

Normally, the 2g sim will connect to the gprs/edge system of the network. It has pathetic speeds like you mentioned. If you use a 3g sim, it will connect to the UMTS data system. You will get significantly higher speeds like most of us here have reported, particularly with your kind of signal strength.
You will have to buy the following from bsnl:
1. A 3g sim for Rs 59/-
2. A first recharge for Rs 120/- with 180 days validity and
3. A suitable data plan which allows certain selected volumes of data usage.
Check out their website for details

Until you insert the 3g sim, you will not be able to realise the full potential of the 3g connection. Work on these details and get back to us. Most likely the mmx card is authentic because our data cards also bear the bsnl logo. Maybe it was custom built for bsnl.

If you look closely, you might find a slot for inserting the micro-memory card somewhere close to sim card slot. [I have one on my Teracom datacard.]
HTH and Good luck.

But dude the sales manager had told us that u will get some speed of 253 kpbs to 950 kpbs....i have also seen the same parameters in 2g sim from this very forum....take a review on this forum fully nd just get back.....dude..... any comments about this thing..

Just to put the records straight, I am not a BSNL franchisee!! And to top it all, I am using 3G anyway, so I really have no compelling need to prove my point. Feel free to search all over the forum yourself if you want a solution to your problem! Wish you luck!! :D

Dude i didn't mean in that way don't be angry i said just for your reference thats it....But my sim is using UMTS or HSPA network most of the time but still slow on network.........any comments on this vertical....

Hi, Hope by now, you would have got this problem solved. If not, my below comments might be useful, I too first tried to use 2G in 3G datacard, because the prepaid charges are only around R.300 for 2G. Also they said, 2G will give 100Kbps. But, 2g gave me only 8KBps (ie 64Kbps) in South chennai. So, I was fed up with the same speed problem. I simply bought a 3g sim and now it is good.Better go for 3G.

Hey prabumitu n others... i hv joined d bsnl 3g problem league too.. Ok listen prabumitu.. first of all , yes you are being cheated.. the price of the modem you got came down to Rs2500 in our state last month.. Its actually the first 3g datacard launched by the bsnl itself.. the modem 4 wich u paid rs4000 is actually a black color micromax modem.. And as u said, if dere was d micromax logo n stuff in d cover den u have been provided d cheaper bsnl datacard in d box n name of micromax bsnl datacard.. So u shud go 2 d dealer or d bsnl office where u bought dis n claim for d black mmx datacard with the bill.. However i must say dat d datacard wont make any difference in the speed..d only difference bw the 2 is dat d modem u got is lockd n will work only with bsnl simcards..d micromx one can operate wid other simcards too.....Secondly regardin d speed.. Get a bsnl 3g sim for rs 59. Get a suitable validity plan.. i guess howevr dat d sim is already life time validated.. Once d sim is activated, get a Re 1/- topup on ur sim... dis will change the sim settings to 2g.. Now get the 274/- unlimited plan.. Ur network will now work on d UTMS or HSDPA mode most of the time..
