one rupee coins are likely to remain relevant for many many decades. it would suck if the cheapest thing you can buy in the market (candy?) would cost more than rs. 10 :D we are getting there though. a decent cigarette nearly cost rs. 10 per stick these days.

Cant say... 5 rupees coins may become the minimum soon... Thats why cards may get bigger push, you can still pay down to the last paisa.

And about 1 rupee being relevant.. Just try getting something at a local small shop here in Chennai for Rs.9 or Rs.19.. You would get the goods + a toffee than a one rupee coin...

More likely than not, you would end up shelling Rs.20/50/100. And if you are lucky you might get 5+2+2=9. Ofcourse this is smaller shops, who probably suppress them even if they have them to make the extra few paisa. Rs.1 are still available in public transport & most bigger shops would give change. All I am saying is - Its the beginning of the end for Rs.1 whereas 50p is on life support.

To add, sometimes even in public transport - the conductor says, will give change later & signs an IOU behind the ticket, especially if its a long journey. And you need to remember to reach out to him, a stop or two ahead to get the change.

I like virtual wallets. [emoji39]

True. In all these years, they cannot even get (prepaid metro style) cards to work on these buses.

Chennai Unified Metropolitan Authority of India (CUMTA) Act was passed in TN Assembly in 2010..To come up with a unified transport policy. And every once in a while there is talk of Smart Cards and stuff..5 years on even Metro has started partially. Still this unification is yet to see the light of the day.
