LibreOffice

Oh Outlook absolutely rocks because of their integration with Exchange. It is a hard to beat combination and corporates would vouch for that. The other solution - absolutely dumb ass - is Lotus. Horrible horrible piece of shit. I doubt IBM uses it themselves.

advanced features? or more apps? features and apps are totally different things.

Are Word Starter and Excel Starter different than full Word and Excel?

Yes, Word Starter and Excel Starter are reduced functionality versions of the full versions of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Word Starter and Excel Starter include features for basic authoring and editing, but lack more powerful features like the ability to track comments and changes in your documents; password protect your documents; create tables of contents, footnotes, citations or bibliographies; perform advanced data analysis such as with pivot tables; and the ability to customize the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar.

i was talking about the home and small office edition man :)

Anyone faced problem using LibreOffice in Ubuntu? I've got a serious problem with Ubuntu absolutely hangingup after every first 1-2 mins of use of LibreOffice Calc or Writer. Also the .xls and .doc documents won't open immediately after starting up Ubuntu, I have to keep trying for 10-15 mins before which it won't open at any cost, and then ofcourse there is the hanging problem.

Absolutely no problems for me.

Are you using a beta version by chance?

righto. experiment with the latest builds available from the libreoffice website. ubuntu would have shipped with a rather old build.

MS Excel is also more helpful for people who have huge databases in SQL and would like to present there data in excel or powerpoint or sharepoint. I have recently made a dashboard in excel which pulls the data from SQL and then finally gets uploaded in sharepoint, Not sure if openoffice can even come close to it. Here am not taking away the credit/usage of openoffice.

I don't know what's the issue then....I have re-installed the whole suite twice or thrice but the problem of crashing does not get solved. And my machine is not at fault for sure......it has 3 GB of RAM. Every time I want to do those reconciliations, I m required to paste the data in bits and pieces. That is despite having the costliest suite of 2007 series. And I also came across the discussion on mail clients......well let me tell that I m one of those unlucky ones who has to use Lotus Notes! :(

@Jaymin, if it's not a security issue, will you be able to share a sample of the file (don't need actual data for obvious reasons) which causes Excel to crash? I am interested in trying it out.

I guess no.....I wud have liked to, but we have strict instructions in respect of data security. Our mails are always scanned especially the ones sent outside of company's network. All I wud be able to tell is that I reconcile the data received from feeder systems with the data in the ledger. Firstly, there's trouble importing the feeder system data from XML format into excel. Next I have to apply certain filters in the data extracted from ledger and paste it below the feeder system data. But that filtered data itself rubs into 10k odd lines. And it invariably crashes if I paste all data together.
