When you save all excel file in binary format which .xlsb it keeps all your pivot table, macros & conditional formating. In short everything what .xlsx will have. I have been saving all my excel files with macros and pivot tables in .xlsb.

Remember certain features like Slicers which are introduced in 2010 version will not be supported in 2007 excel even if the file format is .xlsx

Hah! Office 2010 have been rolled out in my office to everybody and I love the slicers options in pivot table in 2010. But my bad luck most of my offshore clients are still on 2007. Couldnt MS roll out this option with a SP for 2007? Tactics to force everyone to buy 2010.

Thats what i again dont like about Microsoft - Backward compatibility. They make a new version & dont update the old one. U r compulsorily required to do all the spending all over again every 2-3 years they decide to make money! After leeching out all this money from everyone, they make donations & claim it to the world that we make donations! C'mon in the first place if u hadnt employed these cheap tactics, the people who otherwise spent on buying your product, would have themselves donated to that extent!

you are crazy. windows xp cannot get features of windows 7. office 2003 cannot get features of office 2010. you get what you paid for. if you need the new features, you upgrade. that's how it works. if openoffice can do the task that you are trying to do in microsoft excel, maybe you should file a petition with your IT department to let you use openoffice instead of microsoft office. google android gingerbread does not run google chrome for android. i guess google is evil too. newer editions of mozilla firefox probably does not run on windows 98. mozilla is evil too. adobe photoshop 5 surely cannot open PSD files saved in photoshop cs 4. adobe is mega evil i bet. technology evolves. get over it. maybe you should start your own business powered by open source technologies rather than complaining about using microsoft office in your current company.

Well I did not mean these extremes at all! I haven't asked for features of 7 in XP or 98. All I said was if there are certain new things which have been added on an existing code then that can very well be delivered via mere updates?

what exactly is windows 7 compared to windows xp or windows 98? a bunch of new features and technologies and capabilities. if they deliver the same through updates to xp or 98 users, what is the point of releasing a brand new operating system? even linux users are asked to upgrade to newer editions as not everything can be delivered through updates on the previous editions. some features are part of the core and they cannot simply be offered through patches or upgrades. when you buy a software package, you are paying for the functionality it offers you. the company spends more resources on newer versions with newer features so that they would have something new to offer in future versions. open source and proprietary software work differently. you do not mind upgrading to new editions of linux because they are offered to you for free. the same reasoning applies to proprietary software. newer editions have new features and you have to upgrade to it to gain those features.as for the business model of software companies selling software... you are not working in a charitable organization right? you want to have a stable career with confirmed salary. that is why you are working in a company that charges for its services and products. open source software is a great alternative but it is not the perfect solution for everyone.
