HiMy laptop got stolen around 4 months back and I filed an FIR for the same. And suddenly I received a call from the police station, then they require the MAC address of my laptop to retrieve it.But, unfortunately I dont have the MAC address with me right now. Please help me how to obtain the MAC address of my laptop. One think I am going to try is to Contact the Laptop manufacturer and try to get it. But what could be other things which can help me retrieve it.RegardsKapil Munjal

pretty darn cool!

i am not sure if the manufacturer would have the MAC address record of your laptop. if they do, it would be pretty cool!

the only other way would be to get it from your ISP. but it would be very tough to get that information from that looking at the four month time period.

I have my laptop purchase bill, but it doesn't have the mac address. Today I contact Acer support, they asked for all the documents related to purchase of the laptop to be sent to them. Only after receiving and verifying, they will be able to help me.RegardsKapil Munjal

I could not get any help from the Acer customer support, they said that they don't store such information. Now, what should be my next step to get the MAC address? Please guide.Any idea if ISP stores the MAC address of your computer?RegardsKapil Munjal

do you have dump of any previous install of your laptop OS ? like disk image or previous HDD which has the OS installed or a image of your HDD ?if not i think only your Acer would be able to help, ISP's might have the MAC but i am sure they would flush it from their servers in every few days.Never knew police would ask such information, I just wrote down mine one and e-malied it to one of my other ID.

The ISP would only have the MAC on their side if you used a PPP connection(DSL) direct from the PC/Laptop to the server to establish a connection, most cases the MAC of the modem/router is stored on the server, as it does the connecting for you. So it is highly unlikely that the ISP too would be of any help in locating the MAC of the laptop. The only thing you could check is the router's DHCP Log, if it maintains one and see if it stores the MAC and IP allocations.
