i am not sure if this new plan changes a lot for rival players. a 49 rupee plan is not something private operators would want to offer because it would seriously hurt their ARPU figures. it can cost a company more to provide support to the same customer. airtel for example has always been about more expensive plans. they just recently started beating mtnl and bsnl on price point (on higher speed packages). airtel can for example still offer a similar plan to their landline customers. but in the end... MTNL would have tons of more landline users compared to airtel.

i think MTNLs plan is simple, get more users.since MTNL gave free modems for 2-3 months, they seem to have done their homework.once user is addicted, they may go for higher plans. and even if he doesnt even then 49Rs a month is just bonus amount for them.

i am not so optimist about this plan from the mtnl's point of view. providing a landline is not that complicated. a brandband connection on the same line add complications. line conditions, connectivity and modem and system overheads. they are charging around 100 bucks for this package. of course data transfer charges are almost nil... but it would be tough to make enough profits on this plan looking at the logistical expenses mtnl might encounter. they do not have the best network in the market. customer support costs money. billing complications also cost money... and they are going to lose out on those customers who were 'forced' to take their more expensive cheapest plan as you previously mentioned. technically they are competing with themselves and not other companies. :)

1 dollar broadbandHa thats only for Namesake!Mtnl make combo rent of telephone + broadband rent =100 then i might think of getting itUntill then i stick with slogan it's "The Oscar Plan Launched for Worst Broadband plan "Mtnl did it again :):hysterical::hysterical:

officially its USD 1 for the broadband connection. USD 2 with modem rental. a bit more including taxes.

already discussed this before... another thing already discussed... mtnl is competing with itself with this new plan. customers who were earlier forced to go for their previously cheapest plan (which i think cost around Rs. 200) could now switch this new plan. so instead of getting 200 bucks from them, they would now get 50 rupees. so they are harming themselves... and no one else.

i have loyalty scheme plan with 100Rs tel rent and 50 free calls = 50Rs rent effectively.and if i take 49Rs triband plan + 50Rs modem rent, total it wud be 3$ broadband !

As per my knowledge 1Mbps international bandwidth pipe costs arround 5000 to 6000 p.m.

It can't be so high. Rs.5000 p.m. for a 1Mbps line equals Rs.16/GB.

Hayai is itself providing bandwidth at Rs.15/GB after buying it from another ISP (Bharti). So obviously it costs much less than that to Bharti!
