disable dhcp in the modem but dont disable dhcp in the router

----------

Yes, It does... It opens up all your ports.. so you are exposed.. Install a firewall to remain protected.

How is he exposed? I am confused, the modem's lan port is connected to the routers wan port through a lan cable right? the router has firewall so he is still behind a firewall. I have tested this setup with a port scanner with software firewall disabled and it shows all ports stealthed because its behind the routers firewall.

The router's firewall takes care of the open ports :)What I think the op should do is, is create a backup of his current MTNL modem configuration. Then perform a factory reset to both the router and modem. In the modem's interface, set the modem to bridge & disable dhcp, log into the router's interface, set mode to pppoe, enter username password, save configuration and exit. Also, right click on your connection icon in windows, go to properties, tcp/IP properties, set everything to auto, apply and exit. If the above steps are performed correctly, I see no reason why his net shouldn't work.OP, if you aren't able to understand my post, I'll add screenshots from my old Belkin for each step, shouldn't be too hard, now.

Buddy I don't mean to be rude but I have been following this thread yesterday night & found that even though you may be a guru in networking your style of 'explanation' leaves a lot to be desired. I think another member in a post more than 15 posts before has asked you if you could provide screenshots to make things easier for Praful but you have gone on & on about how right you are & not others. Please remember that when you are helping a newbie you should first remember that you have to put things down in a simple way preferably with screen shots else you are bound to confuse the member you are trying to help. If screen shots are not available then keep the theory to the minimum & tell what exactly should be done. Also the DC problem which is bugging Praful might not be connected with what he is trying as another member has mentioned in a past post. Please tell Praful where he could find the line stats so that problem can be solved. Considering that he has not posted from 10.52 last night, you must have really overloaded him with your knowledge :D

@x720 Maybe putting the screen shots will be the best solution. Frankly I am of the opinion for a newbie the PPPoE is the best option unless he is into downloading thru torrents etc

What are you talking about? I just re read the entire thread i dont see where any one asked me to post screenshots , can you give a link?, I wasnt going on&on that i am right and others are wrong It was socrates who first asked me the reason for choosing bridge mode instead of pppoe and i was just answering him & the discussion went on from there, i corrected krish when he said that the ports are open in bridge mode but he forgot that the router also has a firewall , i did this & quoted krish's post because i wanted to know whether he was talking about some other method & whether i wasnt able to understand him correctly.

And x720 above has posted the same thing i posted on page one.

Thanks for all the info xyx2000.... I will try today once more ...Question 1) i should directly connect my Modem to desktop, configure it in Bridge mode and then connect my router and configure it in PPPoE mode OR connect both router and modem and then configure it.2) Should i also download any Firewall software ?3) Also i use utorrents to download files ..configuration stated above wont have an adverse effect on utorrent downloads ?Right now in offc ..so will do it in evening ...will post once i do all of the above as stated by xyx2000.Thanks a ton guys ...a lot to learn !!!!

^ yes option 1

Connect your modem to desktop , configure it in bridge , then connect your modem to your router through lan cable , now configure router in pppoe mode , you will have to enter your mtnl username & pass in the router when configuring in pppoe , if you have any issues post here , which os are you using?

Do not try wireless right now , connect your router to your desktop through lan cable.

2) Your router has a firewall for incoming traffic just like your modem did ( which is now disabled in bridge mode), if you want to block out going traffic then you can use a software firewall

3) you will have to open the utorrent ports in your router

Buddy ! Agreed that router has a firewall... Do you think that itself is enough to protect you from any threats around the internet?? If then, i guess you are wrong... If you are completely dependent then you need to do a cross check... A software firewall keeps you UPDATED and protected from all the latest threats... be it any kind of an attack... I have already given the complete details and procedure of working in a bridged... I have been using the same for a quite a number of years.
