Hello.I wish to get a 3G connection from MTNL and I have two questions:1) Do I need to buy their dongle or can I use the one I buy elsewhere?2) If I buy a 7.2 mbps dongle, will I get ~7.2 mbps speeds?I have seen the MTNL dongle and I see that from the technology they use, they are limited to 3.6mbps, but there are better, faster dongles available with twice the speeds. They are a few hundred rupees costlier, BUT for twice the speed, I can bear a few more bucks as it is only a one time investment.I see that the faster 7.2 mbps ones also use the same technology i.e. HSDPA and there is also a thing called HSUPA which gives 2 mbps upload. But the MTNL is limited to 384kbps Upload speeds. Will it be possible if I buy my own dongle and get 7.2 DL and 2.0 UL speeds :DBut the question remains, can I use my own dongle OR do I have to use the one provided by MTNL and If I use my own, will I get better, faster speeds?Thank you for your replies.

You can use any dongle that is WCDMA 2100 band compatible and supports Indian 3G standards (WCDMA is different than CDMA). The dongle needs to be network unlocked (Able to accept MTNL sim)3.6 Mbps, 7.2 Mbps, 14.4 Mbps, 21.6 Mbps, 28.8 Mbps, 42 Mbps dongles will give you only 3.6 Mbps theoretical download speed on MTNL 3G. MTNL's 3G network is HSDPA Release 5 Category 5/6. (Actual download speed is 2.2 Mbps and upload speed is 0.35 Mbps)But on higher speed dongles, you will get more speed as MTNL increases speeds in future.MTNL's APN in Mumbai is gprsppsmum

Thank you for your reply.

BTW, if I take Rs.4500 for 6 monthly UNLIMITED plan, then is it really unlimited or does it have a Fair Usage Policy?

Activate HSDPA service by sending SMS 'ACT HSDPA' to '444'.
Activation charges of Rs.449/- will be deducted from prepaid account.
The MTNL website says that for activating HSDPA I will need another Rs.449 Is it true? Because someone said I don't need to activate it for Unlimited connection and it is activated automatically if my dongle supports it?

Rs. 4500 plan has 800 GB FUP
Alright, and is this per month or for 6 months?! And is this Download only or download + upload? And what happens once I run out of 800GB?

And what about the HSDPA activation charges? Are they there or not?

Thanks a lot for your replies. You have been very helpful :)

If you have purchased a compatible 3G data card from the open market, you can choose from our prepaid or postpaid plan. Just take a prepaid or postpaid connection and perform the given settings:
Prepaid- APN-gprsppsmum, User Name- mtnl, Password- mtnl123
Postpaid- APN-gprsmtnlmum, User Name- mtnl, Password-mtnl123
Now you are ready to experience thrilling speed with MTNL 3G.

i guess its both upload+download!!

800 GB FUP is total for 6 months and it should be download + upload in worst case scenario.
Incase you run out of 800GB give a call to call centre and let us know. ;)

Send ACT HSDPA to 444 to activate up to 3.6 Mbps speeds. Charge is Rs. 449 with 450 Mb free usage for a month.

@bobbyguitarist

For MTNL Mumbai 3G/HSDPA access, entering APN is sufficient.
Leave username and password fields blank.

This is so disappointing that it is (probably) Download + Upload 800GB and why are MTNL people so stupid to charge Rs. 449 with 450MB for an unlimited plan?! Now with 4500 for the plan, 3000 for the dongle (coz I'd buy the 21.6 mbps one to be future proof!) and 450 for activating HSPDA I'm now contemplating if I should stick with my triband 752kbps or go for 3G with all those piling charges!

Anyways, thanks for your help sanke1 and bobbyguitarist :)

^ It's the decision you shd take buddy.. I too paid 4.5k + 449 + 3k (approx 1.3k/month) overall.. But the speed is > 2MBps and free roaming.. wht else one asks for :)Check my signature for the speed.. I get > 220KBps in torrents consistently provided you have full signal.. the worst i got so far (with hardly any signal) is 60KBps..

It is still pretty less than the advertised 3.6 mbps, but the temptation of the high speeds is just too hard to resist. I am seriously contemplating getting it and might as well get it!

800GB is the value of DATA that u get Initially and once u consume it withing 6 months the automatically 800GB will be added. 800GB is upload+download but MTNL will add another 800 GB if 800GB get consumed
This is very nice! Then this means that it is effectively 'truly unlimited.' Then why all this fuss about 800GB IF it'll get automatically added once consumed?! Anyways, this is a great news for me!

Thank you very much for your help :)
