Hi GuysI have recently taken airtel UL home 799 plan...and since I am studying and can't afford much :( I have shared it with a guy living on the floor above...so it comes to around 440/- including taxes :thumbsup:But this incentive comes with a price :(I am using the WLAN using the Airtel WiFi modem while he is plugged in thru router..as the modem is with him :(The problem is that unlike D-Link modems..this cheap Airtel Beetels are not that powerful...and I am geting mostly like 2 lins (out of 5) in my signal strength..which amounts to a WLAN speed of 11-12 Mbps...while in his room I can get all 5 lines with 54 Mbps :cry:So here goes my queries..1. Does the signal strength and WLAN speed (Mbps) affect the download/upload speeds...or surfing speeds?2. I tried connecting a LAN cable I had so as to get the ethernet connection as there are 4 ports in WiFi modem..but somehow it did not work..while when plugged in the Airtel ethernet cable (the small one they provide) it detected LAN connection....So is the Airtel ethernet connector is different than the normal LAN cables used in switches (Though it looked the same to me :() or do I need to get it punched...with the airtel connector thingy?3. I had askd the Airtel guys to provide a parallel connection in my room of the line...so that I can plug in the modem and use it here as well...So can I plug in my spare modem in the same line in which the WiFi modem is plugged in the other room....and work with divided bandwidth....(though when I tried the link and data LEDs did not light up...:()....Please help me...so that I can enjoy my 256 kbps connection to the max....:)ThanX in advance.RegardsAshish

yeah... net speed depends on signal strength of wlan. another important problem is barriers in between modem and your laptop(walls, etc). it can affect the quality of connection. if you are living in hostel, immediately shift to his room. this can solve the problem.:)

Well I wish I could... :(The thing is that the other guy has a PC and I have a laptop..so he need to have the modem :(At times I am getting around 30kbps download on utorrent and general download....but I am sure the connection is capable of much more...:(Any help will be much appreciated...any ideas to improve the signal strength of WiFi modem??

I replied once.. and it went off 'page cant be displayed' error..

Well... again..

The problem is that unlike D-Link modems..this cheap Airtel Beetels are not that powerful...and I am geting mostly like 2 lins (out of 5) in my signal strength..which amounts to a WLAN speed of 11-12 Mbps...while in his room I can get all 5 lines with 54 Mbps

Remember we were having wireless routers having speeds of 11mbps just before this 54mbps routers or 108mbps ones...

So according to me, if the signal strength is 11-12mbps, it wont affect your internet at all... provided you are not facing frequent disconnections...

It will affect if you want to send a file to your friend thru network. You wont get much speed.....

For WAN, this 11-12mbps is more than enough !!

Think this way (if you are not getting my maths right) ...
Maximum speed of internet you get is 2mbps.. and you have a 11mbps router to share it . so will thataffect the speed ? No.. !!
If your speed is 2mbps and you have signal strength of 1-2mbps, and you are facing frequent disconnection, it will affect your speed !!

At times I am getting around 30kbps download on utorrent and general download....but I am sure the connection is capable of much more...

If you are sure , just get your laptop to his room and get yourself confirmed about the speed dear :P ! No scope for thinking ;) Just do it !!

All the best :)

appus is right. Signal strength does not affect your speed, although it might be a reason for disconnections. The major factor which affects WiFi speed is Encryption (security). Like almost all WPA security standards (WPA-PSK [TKIP], WPA2-PSK [AES], WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]) cut the speed almost to half. And as for the speed, 12Mbps is more than enough for current Airtel connections. But this is also true, regardless of how fast your WiFi router is, you will get a much better speed if you use a wired connection.

But this is also true, regardless of how fast your WiFi router is, you will get a much better speed if you use a wired connection.

is that proven ? are you saying about internet speed or local data transfer across the network ? if you are saying about data transfer in your network (LAN), i agree.. But, if you say your internet speed will be better with wired connection, i have to disagree !!

I am using Wireless .. i get always.. 60-75 kbps on my bsnl 256kbps unlimited ! even when i connect thru cable, i get the same speed.. On what basis you are saying speed is better ? please tell the reason..

@appusyes technically speaking there shudnt be any reasons for speeds 2 to b less on wifi compared to wired connection..but there is some difference for sure... am on mtnl 256 ul connection..on pc my speed is usually between 225kbps to 230kbps and on laptop it never goes above 220 kbps.so there seems to b some difference.:confused:by d way i sit right next to my router, so there is not going to be any signal loss issue here.

Yes, it has been proven. Just google "WiFi vs Wired" and you will get loads of results. The reason is that Internet speed is the speed from your broadband router to the Internet. Switching between wired and wireless is going to change the results of any test as such. With wired connection, you save the time from your wireless device to wireless router to broadband router. In a slow connection with 64kbps to 512kbps (which is common in India), this is not apparent because the difference is very less, but higher speed connections display the difference almost instantly. Also, because WiFi connections are half duplex (can only send or receive not both at same time) and contention based (users/devices and have to wait to transmit) you can never take advantage of the full duplex nature of wired Internet connections.

thanks.. i wasnt aware and i was getting same speed.. i will check again and update.. Thanks again for the update !!

You can have gigabit ethernet in your home, but if you're connecting to the internet via a 1.5 Mbps DSL line, all the gigabit in the world isn't going to make your web sites load any faster.

By the same logic, a telephone conversation in the directly connected landline Telephone, should be louder, compared with a Cordless phone handset ( which is also wireless )!. if you go say 30 feet away incoming signal will be weaker !!!!
Wireless signals travel at the speed of light which is: 1,86,000 MILES/SECOND.
Most home use WIFI routers are having very low Tx power and the range. is limited ( say 30 feet radius )
( Wireless communication theory : Out of thread ).

Para two :
Also, because WiFi connections are half duplex
checking it up.
